Fighting Against Stereotypes

with Olga E. Custodio, barrier-breaking pilot

See what it took for Olga E. Custodio to become our nation’s fighter-qualified Latina pilot.

She refusedto be grounded.

Fighting Spirit

Olga E. Custodio had to fight just to get into flight school. But by the time she earned her wings, she’d broken more barriers than just the sound barrier.

When Olga E. Custodio first tried to enlist, she was rejected just because she was a woman. But Olga would not give up. She fought for her chance to serve her country. Olga had a fighting spirit that would not be grounded. She flew into the history books, as our nation’s fighter-qualified Latina pilot, and then a flight school instructor, pinning wings onto others who would not be grounded.

“I figured, if they can do it, so can I.”
